Domestic Abuse
Using RADAR in Working with Clients Experiencing Both Substance Abuse and Domestic Violence
Routinely Screen
For domestic violence in all of your substance abuse clients: screen for both victims and perpetrators.
Ask Direct Questions
Learn to frame questions in a way that can relieve a client’s discomfort in disclosure, whether a victim or a perpetrator.
Document
The results of any screening tools, assessments, or referrals that you make in the client’s record.
Assess Client Safety
Conduct safety planning with your client every time you have contact. Distribute client safety planning cards with emergency numbers and suggestions. (If your center does not have these, contact your local domestic violence center for safety planning and other resources.)
Review Client Options and Referrals
Discuss appropriate referrals and strategies for avoiding abuse.
