Maine's
Attorney General has estimated that 60,000 Maine women
are abused each year by their husbands or boyfriends,
with as many as 8,500 of them living in York County.
Domestic violence related homicides represent the majority
of murders committed in Maine each year and during his
January 2000 State of the State Address, Governor Angus
King declared “violence against women and children” to
be “Maine's Public Enemy Number One”.
Since 1977 Caring Unlimited has offered safety planning
and support services for people seeking safety from
domestic violence in York County.
Over the years, thousands of women, their children
and men have found safe haven and support through
Caring Unlimited services, including the 24 Hour
Hotline, Support Groups held throughout York county,
Advocacy at four local courthouses, Emergency Shelter
and the Transitional Housing and Services program
and more. Caring Unlimited
Services are confidential and provided free
of charge to any person victimized
in an intimate relationship.
