Battered women tell us time and time again that
they cannot become safe from domestic abuse unless
they can financially support themselves and their
children.
Caring Unlimited has developed a new women’s
economic development initiative as part of our Transitional
Services Program in order to respond to requests
from the people we serve.
The initiative includes a number of opportunities
for women to get the information and learn the skills
they need in order to build economically secure lives.
Program components include:
Information Sessions—2-hour
sessions about available resources and how to access
them
Personal
Economic Planning (PEP) Course—a
12-hour course designed to assist women in creating
their own individualized action plan to achieve economic
security
Bridge
to Economic Self-Determination (Diffendoofer School)—a 96 hour experiential education course
that uses “challenge-by-choice” activities
to help participants (re)connect with their inherent
strengths, necessary for them to achieve their hopes,
goals and dreams for themselves and their kids. This
course was affectionately renamed “Diffendoofer
School” by the first participants after a Dr.
Seuss story about an alternative school that is read
early in the course. “I discovered who I am;” “I
remembered what I liked;” “I have stuff
I can give to the world!“ “I am alive!
I will never be the way I was again;” are some
of the comments made by program participants after
completing Diffendoofer School at Caring Unlimited. ......................................................................................................................................................................................................................
