The use of substances will have a different impact upon both the victim and the abuser. It is critical for you to recognize the impact upon each party.
Impact of substance abuse on
Perpetrator of domestic violence
- May increase severity of abuse
- Will use substance abuse impairment as an excuse for battering
- Blackouts or high periods may cause perpetrators to “forget” violent behavior
Victim
- May increase use of substances to cope with abuse
- May be sabotaged in recovery efforts by abuser
- Using may give a false sense of safety or security
Both
- May increase tension in relationship
- May increase danger
- May result in neglect or abuse of children
