'Missy's Run' will Benefit States' Domestic Violence Programs
Jul 22, 2010
SANFORD — The first-ever "Missy's Run" will take place on Saturday, July 24, to raise funds for Caring Unlimited in Sanford and New Hampshire Domestic Violence Programs, A Safe Place and the Manchester YWCA in New Hampshire.
The motorcycle ride will be in honor of Melissa Cantin Charbonneau, a young mother from Manchester, New Hampshire, who was shot and killed by her husband in October of last year. Melissa, who worked as a nurse, had left her abusive husband, obtained a restraining order and filed for divorce just a few days before this incident. Melissa's father was with her when she returned to her old home to retrieve some of her belongings when she was killed.
"Missy's Run," which will take place rain or shine, will leave from American Legion Post 19 on Main Street in Sanford. The motorcycle ride will travel 80 miles through Maine and New Hampshire, with stops at parks and scenic outlooks along the way, before ending at American Legion Post 7 in Rochester, New Hampshire.
Registration in Sanford runs from 8 to 10 a.m. that morning and costs $20 per bike and rider, with $5 for an additional passenger. Riders will leave from Sanford at 10 a.m. and will arrive in Rochester around noon, at which time participants will be treated to a spaghetti dinner, music, entertainment and raffles throughout the afternoon. Non-riders are invited to join the fun at the Rochester American Legion for a $10 donation at the door.
Event organizer Anita Manupelli's goal is to raise awareness about the prevalence of domestic violence in communities throughout Maine and New Hampshire.
