Nicole's Run/ Walk Set for July 18

Jul 1, 2010

KENNEBUNK- The third annual Nicole's Run and Walk to benefit Caring Unlimited, York County's Domestic Violence Program, will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday, July 18, at Lord's Point, Kennebunk Beach.  The 5k run and walk will begin at 9 a.m. with registration opening at 6:45 a.m.  Registration fees are $20 in advance and $25 on race-day.

In 2007, Nicole Oliver, a 24-year-old mother of two from Wells, was killed by her husband, who then took his own life.  Nicole had recently left her abusive husband and was working to rebuild a safe and secure life for herself and her two young sons.  She was attending York County Community College, taking courses that would help her achieve her goal of becoming a registered nurse.  On the promise of money to help Nicole afford a new apartment for herself and her children, she returned to her old home, where her husband then took her life.

In the wake of this tragedy, Nicole's friends and family organized the first Nicole's Run to coincide with the first anniversary of her death.  Three years later, Nicole's Run continues to honor her memory and raise awareness about domestic violence in York County.

Caring Unlimited serves approximately 3,000 individuals each year whose lives are affected by domestic abuse.  Money raised by Nicole's Run/ Walk goes directly to support these individuals, by supporting the programs and services offered by Caring Unlimited.  Those services include: a 24-hour confidential hotline, emergency shelter, transitional housing, support and education groups, legal advocacy, school-based education and advocacy and community education.
